Communication is key to bridge the knowledge gaps and minimize misunderstanding among the stakeholders; without winning the public trust, the science mission will not achieve the support of the community.

Thu Ya integrates field-measured forest ecophysiological traits with remote sensing, which augment his ability to understand the interactions between forest ecosystem and climate change on a large scale. Currently, he is working on a NASA-funded ECOSTRESS project that investigates semi-arid forest resilience to regional drought. He measures evapotranspiration of ponderosa pine forest to validate ECOSTRESS satellite products in the semi-arid northern Arizona forests. He believes that scientists should do more than just writing manuscripts for other scientists. Besides research and teaching, he is honing science communication skills to disseminate his science-based findings and insights towards a broader audience to better inform land management.
