Mollie Gaines is a Ph.D. Candidate at North Carolina State University studying Geospatial Analytics. She works with Dr. Mirela Tulbure in the Geospatial Analysis for Environmental Change Lab. Her research focuses on detecting, modeling, and predicting surface water area in the southeastern United States using satellite imagery, climate data, and land cover/land use data. In March 2022, she published the first chapter of her dissertation. She graduated from William & Mary in 2019 with a B.S. in Data Science and GIS. She credits her undergraduate advisor (Dr. Dan Runfola) and her mentor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Dr. Christa Brelsford) for inspiring her interest in using data science to approach problems at the intersection of the environment and society.
