Project Description

Inspiring Futures in STEM: Interactive Physics Demonstrations for Local Youth

The left side of this red and blue graphic displays the title “Inspiring Diverse Futures in STEM” with a spiral galaxy icon and NASA@My Library logo. The right half shows a classroom scene with students engaging in a science activity. A large “FUNDED” stamp overlaps both sides. The hexagonal photo in the bottom right shows Finis L. Stribling IV, listed as a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The Inspiring Futures in STEM project aims to engage underrepresented youth in physics through interactive demonstrations and presentations. By delivering 15-20 sessions at the San Antonio Public Library’s Carver Branch, the program introduces students aged 9-13 to key physics concepts such as gravity, electromagnetism, and fluid dynamics. Each one-hour session features hands-on demonstrations, fostering a deeper understanding of STEM and expanding students' career aspirations.

The program will also highlight diverse scientists and career paths, empowering participants to envision themselves as future scientists. Through weekly sessions over a semester, Finis will build lasting connections with the students, boosting their confidence and STEM literacy. Collaborations with NASA @ My Library and the Space Science Institute provide additional resources, including solar telescopes and educational kits. The long-term goal is to diversify the STEM pipeline and strengthen UTSA’s role as a community-engaged institution.

SME Bio

My goal is to show that becoming a scientist is a realistic and achievable option for children who might not see many people who look like them in the field. By doing so, I hope to inspire and empower the next generation of scientists.
