Encouraging enthusiastic students from a variety of backgrounds to become planetary scientists—or become involved in planetary science in a multitude of ways, including communication, outreach and beyond—is the best thing for the field, because it both broadens knowledge of the science and improves and expands the science being performed.

Emmy Hughes is a 4th year PhD candidate at Georgia Tech, where she is studying Mars geology. Emmy is interested in how salts and other materials change mineralogically or chemically depending on the environmental conditions under which they formed, and how these differences can be observed via spectroscopic techniques. Emmy's research involves analogue data, rover data (Emmy is very honored to be on the Mars Curiosity rover team!), geochemical modeling and orbital Mars data.
