Offered in-person or online, at an introductory (100) level or advanced (200) level, in a modular, series, or mix-n-match format, and from 3-4 hours to 1-3 days.
Scicomm foundations
Essentials of connecting with audiences, identifying and reducing jargon, and developing effective messages.
Science storytelling
The science behind storytelling and its power; story structures and themes; story elements; examples of science stories; opportunities to identify and create story elements and/or stories (200-level).
Using multimedia for scicomm / science visuals
Introduction to the variety of multimedia used for SciComm; examples of effective multimedia science storytelling; tips and activities for four areas of multimedia as well as guidance and practice on pre-production.
Social media for scicomm
The benefits and challenges of social media; identifying best practices; choosing outlets and platforms; developing accounts and campaigns.
Working with the media
Understanding journalists and their audiences; newsworthiness; writing op-eds and letters to the editor; press releases; being interviewed; building relationships with journalists.
Presentations and public speaking
Best practices in connecting with audiences; creating effective visual presentations; giving talks, with opportunities for practice and planning.
Developing effective science-day exhibits and activities
Introduction to booths and other family-focused activities; best practices on tailoring to audiences, choosing engaging activities, identifying and measuring impact.
Working with K-12 students
Introduction to student and teacher motivation, customizing your science to age appropriate messaging, and generating activities that support your messaging.
