Beyond Research:

Fostering connections through science communication

For institutions

Build communication capacity within your institution

High-quality research needs high-quality communication. The Beyond Research institutional training series helps universities, labs, and research centers develop repeatable, evidence-based approaches to communicating science, internally, to funders and policy makers, and to the public. Our institutional offerings are flexible (live online, in-person, and cohort models) and designed to embed communication practice across teams and programs.

Training formats

Choose the format that fits your team’s goals and schedule or mix and match options to build the right combination of sessions, hands-on experiences, and ongoing support for your institution.

Live online workshops

Time: 3 - 4 hours

Focus: Interactive practice focused session for groups of researchers

Four people sit at a table engaged in a science communication board game activity during a workshop. They are talking, rolling dice, and using a red hourglass timer while others work at nearby tables in the background.

In-person workshops

Time: 1-3 full days

Focus: Product focused days for hands-on practice and peer feedback

A group of smiling attendees poses together behind a large white AGU logo and photo frame backdrop at the American Geophysical Union conference. The AGU wall behind them reads “Advancing Earth and Space Sciences.”

Cohort programs

Time: 6 - 12 months

Focus: Workshops and guided projects to turn skills into institutional practice.

We teach science communication competencies

  • Audience-centered messaging: identify audiences, prioritize their needs, and craft messages that land without oversimplifying.
  • Reducing jargon & clarity techniques: practical strategies to translate technical concepts into accessible language for public, policy, and interdisciplinary audiences.
  • Story structure for science: frameworks to convert findings into narratives that convey significance, uncertainty, and relevance.
  • Visual communication & data storytelling: designing accessible figures, slides, and visuals (including accessibility best practices such as colorblind-friendly palettes and readable fonts).
  • Media & stakeholder engagement: pitching to journalists, preparing for interviews, and framing findings for policy makers and funders.
  • Digital presence & social media for researchers: building a professional online profile, creating short-form content, and managing public interactions.
  • Listening & facilitation skills: techniques for responsive public dialogues, Q&A, and community-facing events.

Why it matters

Institutions that invest in SciComm capacity see tangible results:

  • Broader visibility for research impact.
  • More effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Higher confidence among scientists engaging outside their fields.
  • Stronger alignment with funding-agency expectations for outreach and broader impacts

After the [cohort], I felt like I had a community. For the first time, I felt like my experience had guidance and direction and the community felt a bit smaller, as if I finally had buy-in.
